Project Snapshot

Jogighopa, Assam, strategically located at the confluence of road, rail, inland waterway, and air connectivity in Northeast India, was identified as a priority location for the development of a Multi-Modal Logistics Park spanning over 1,000 acres. As one of India’s most significant gateway nodes for trade with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar, the site presented a compelling but complex logistics opportunity requiring rigorous demand validation before large-scale infrastructure investment could be committed.

ASCELA conducted a comprehensive market and traffic assessment, covering commodity-wise demand characterisation, origin-destination analysis, cross-border freight flows, and multi-modal supply chain assessment, delivering the market evidence base needed to anchor the MMLP’s infrastructure planning and investment case.

The Challenge

Multi-Modal Demand Complexity

Jogighopa’s connectivity across road, rail, inland waterways, and air required demand assessment across all four modes simultaneously, each with distinct cargo profiles, infrastructure constraints, and growth trajectories that needed to be analysed and reconciled into a unified traffic picture.

Cross-Border Freight Dynamics

The facility’s strategic position as a gateway for trade with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar introduced cross-border freight flows governed by bilateral trade agreements, customs protocols, and geopolitical variables, adding a layer of complexity well beyond a standard domestic traffic assessment.

Fragmented Market Intelligence

Northeast India’s logistics market is characterised by dispersed industrial clusters, limited formal data availability, and diverse cargo generation patterns across multiple states, making primary market intelligence gathering and commodity-wise demand characterisation a significant fieldwork challenge.

What we Delivered

Northeast India’s logistics potential has long been acknowledged but rarely quantified with the rigour that infrastructure investment demands. At ASCELA, we built the market evidence that turns gateway ambition into a grounded investment proposition.

Market Size & Demand Characterisation

Comprehensive assessment of the current logistics market size across the MMLP hinterland, characterising demand by commodity type, cargo category, and mode of transport, and translating findings into a forward-looking demand forecast across key planning horizons.

Market Segment Analysis

Detailed characterisation of the size, current demand, and growth potential across significant market segments, identifying the highest-value cargo categories and trade corridors for the proposed facility to prioritise.

Network Coverage Assessment

Estimation of the network coverage capability required to effectively serve the established market demand, providing the spatial and connectivity framework needed to define the MMLP's operational catchment and infrastructure requirements.

Multi-Modal Supply Chain Analysis

Transport supply chain assessment covering the end-to-end movement of goods across road, rail, inland waterways, and air, identifying inefficiencies, modal shift opportunities, and service gaps that the Jogighopa MMLP is strategically positioned to address.
