India’s cold chain sector is entering a phase where the opportunity extends well beyond building more cold storage. Rising demand for fresh and temperature-sensitive products, growth in food processing and pharmaceuticals, expanding organised retail, and evolving consumer expectations are creating the need for a cold chain that is larger, more reliable and better connected.
The next phase of growth will depend on how effectively India connects the different links of the chain from production and aggregation to storage, transportation, distribution and the end market. Capacity that exists in isolation cannot deliver the full value of a cold chain; what matters is an integrated network that enables the right product to move at the right temperature, at the right time and at the right cost.
Unlocking this opportunity will therefore require a shift from infrastructure creation to ecosystem integration supported by better planning, technology, multimodal connectivity, operational efficiency and stronger alignment between infrastructure and demand.
This paper provides views to initiate thinking and discussion on how India can build a more integrated cold chain ecosystem, one that not only reduces losses and improves efficiency, but also enables new markets, strengthens supply chains and supports the next phase of growth.
