India’s shipbuilding sector is gathering steady momentum, driven by a national focus on maritime strength and industrial capability. As global trade routes evolve and the demand for resilient, diversified supply chains grows stronger, the resurgence of India’s shipbuilding industry is not just timely—it is imperative. This article—Ambitious Shipbuilding Momentum: India’s Leap Towards Global Shipbuilding Dominance—lays out not just the strategic importance of the sector but also the concrete steps being taken to revitalise it.
Shipbuilding is far more than a manufacturing capability—it is a strategic asset. It brings together heavy industry, precision engineering, and innovation, while generating large-scale employment and driving coastal economic development. India has all the core ingredients: a strategic location, growing demand and a strong talent pool. What is now unfolding is an ecosystem that brings together public policy, private investment and global partnerships.
Today, shipbuilding is being repositioned as a critical part of our broader economic and industrial ambition. More than just ships, it’s about jobs, innovation, coastal development and national capability. The steps being taken by the Government—including the upcoming Maritime Development Fund, Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy 2.0 and the development of integrated shipbuilding clusters—demonstrate a serious and structured approach to building scale and self-reliance. As we deepen our commitment to “Make in India” and strengthen our maritime capabilities under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, shipbuilding will remain a critical pillar of India’s rise as a maritime power.
This Insight Paper aims to explore strategic thinking and action. Through collaborative effort by Invest India and ASCELA, we are working to decode the Shipbuilding ambition: to build for India and to build for the world unlock the sector’s full potential.
